I don't want to believe it but I need help with glasses!

When leaves are turning red and yellow it is definitely fall; when it is snowing it must be winter; when you need reading glasses you are irreversibly "over the hill" - and it looks like I just reached that happy stage of my life!
So trying to make lemonade out of lemons of getting older I want my first glasses to be a perfect accessory. The problem is  - I am a complete dilettante when it come to glasses and I need all combined YLF wisdom to make it right.
these pictures are from the first store I visited today. I am going to visit all of them in my city (hey, I need to have my fun, right?) but I would like to know if any of those are "maybe".
Colors are not captured very well here so I would like to get your reaction for the shape and size most of all. They are reading glasses for the computer so I will not wear them all the time (which should not prevent me from having fun with them anyway, right? :-) )

pic 1
Red frame on the left (I don't have a separate picture for this one). I was not sure if it is too square and not uplifting.
Green underside. I like the funky shape but not sure if it is too dark for me.

pic 2
Left: these are man frames which somehow attracted me but looking at the picture I think they may be too square? they have fun creamy yellow underside and sides are plaid.
Right: these are fun but is it too much? yellow inside and outside.

pic 3
Left: dark blue. Looking at the picture I think they maybe too wide for me?
Right: lighter blue. Both are pretty classic in shape

pic 4: not considering those - just for fun! I like my sunglasses big but somehow I want the reading glasses to be smaller...
Left; I liked white and black frame but too big!
Right: serious cat eye - or even butterfly eye here!

Do you think any of the first 6 work for me or should I scratch all of them and keep looking?

Thanks for your help!

Ooooh! I know I ought to sympathize but you make this process so fabulous that I cannot. Because what could be more gorgeous than Sveta in specs?!?

In all seriousness, though, I do know it can be a painful transition. On the other hand, with your attitude, you will be loving your glasses in no time! And it is always better to see than not to see.

I absolutely love the second pair in #1 (green). They  may be too dark; it is hard to say. Can you get a picture with you wearing an outfit? My suspicion is that they will not be too dark if you are wearing a darker outfit. They will be too dark if your outfit is all light.

I have to wear my specs much more, of course, but I find that my (similar shaped) black with white insides specs work great as long as I use them to "bookend" darker elements in an outfit. Of course I have lighter hair and lighter skin so they "read" even darker on me than these do on you -- and yet I like them.

I also have my pink/ fuchsia pair which are also a bit on the dark side but work better with colour and even lights.

ETA: I like the yellow ones, too, but you have to be at peace with the colour.

You should ask to see if either of those comes in any other colours!  :)

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

I echo everything your buddy Suz says. (And HOW FUN that we can be specs triplets).

I like the yellow frames best too - but you need a cooler colour. xo

  • Missey replied 9 years ago

I love the ones on the right side of the photo in one and two, I think the slight cat eye provides a real lift and lightness to your face.  I am in the same boat as you...I went from 20/20 straight to bifocals this year!  My every day glasses are Barton Perriera Dreamgirl, a slight cat eye, and I love them!

  • Missey replied 9 years ago

PS, I own five pairs of glasses, very selectively culled, because I hate to be limited ;)

  • Echo replied 9 years ago

I really like pairs #1, 2 and 4. Both pairs in picture 3 and picture 4 aren't as flattering, IMO. But you look GREAT in glasses, and having one more stylish accessory is always a good thing!

  • lyn* replied 9 years ago

I have tons of pairs of glasses too, but I stick to what's familiar, I guess, because I don't really swap them up too much - I also love #1 for you :)

  • SarahTheWhite replied 9 years ago

Wow, there is something so gorgeous about those yellow ones on you!! Like Angie said, a cooler color would be beautiful on you, and in that shape... Perfection! My two cents...
And welcome to the world of reading glasses. It's not so bad over on this side. :-)

  • rae replied 9 years ago

Your post is funny. I know it must feel weird to make the change, but FWIW I never thought glasses were an age indicator. Plenty of my schoolmates wore them all through life. I like all the colored ones best; the black seem a little harsh.

  • Sveta replied 9 years ago

Suz and Angie, this is another 'lemonade" here - to be your specs triplet (even for a limited time on the computer). I also was attracted to green and yellow pairs most of all...hmmm, I will check if they come in different colors...
Missey, you understand! I would love to see your glasses.
Sarah, lyn and Echo - thank you!
Rae, if you don't think of glasses as age indicator it means you are too young! :-) When I visited optometrist and complained that my eyes are often tired he told me that there is nothing wrong with my eyes except they aged and need glasses (it was a shock to hear this for the first time...)

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

Rae, some kinds of vision changes are age-related. Presbyopia is what happens when the muscles in the eye lose their flexibility and take longer to refocus at different distances. People end up needing reading glasses or glasses for other close work.

There are other kinds of visual problems that are age related, too -- like macular degeneration, cataracts, etc.

Then you have people like me who get it all ways. I had specs as a kid and now I need different specs as an adult for the age-related stuff!  ;)

  • Von replied 9 years ago

I really love the red ones on you - the huge cat eye glasses are fun, but look way too large for reading glasses.

I say if you don't have to wear them constantly, go as crazy as you want though. I've worn glasses since I was 10!

  • Debbie replied 9 years ago

Love the yellow ones. Understand on the age related vision problems. You will rock the glasses though.

  • Gigi replied 9 years ago

My favorite is the first pair, in dark red.

I have worn glasses since fourth grade. :^)

  • Laura (rhubarbgirl) replied 9 years ago

I like the red and the lighter blue.

  • catgirl replied 9 years ago

The yellow ones are fab in shape for you! Your face is perfect for glasses.

I have been wearing glasses most of my life so I don't associate them with age, but you are a spring chicken, Sveta! I'm certain I am older than you so don't make me feel aged! :).

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

    I like 2, 6, & 7. I hit over the hill at 12!

  • deb replied 9 years ago

    I vote yellow #2

  • rae replied 9 years ago

Well, yes, there is no denying that there are vision changes are age related. All I meant is that, when I see glasses on someone, it doesn't factor into how I perceive their age. Does that make sense?

  • Adelfa replied 9 years ago

I think I'm the only one, but I really love #5 far and away above the rest.

  • Runcarla replied 9 years ago

The shapes of the right side glasses in #1 and #2 really suit, but I like the red ones very much. Narrowed down, right side #2 of this lot are my favourites on you.

    Hard stuff this glasses shopping.

  • CocoLion replied 9 years ago

Wow, you look very good in glasses.  Lucky you.

I love the last two.  They are not too big, you can pull them off.  They are so, so chic!  The last pair, the upturned cats eyes, are my favorites for you.

I like 2 and 4 equally if you want something smaller (by 2 and 4 I mean second and fourth from the left).  Love the drama of the fourth pair, the yellow ones.

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

The second pair in pic 1. Stunning. And I hear you. I am still in denial to the point where often rebelliously don't take my glasses with me!

  • Karie replied 9 years ago

My favorites are the second pair in #1 and those gorgeous yellow side framed ones in #2. The ones on the right in #4 are fun but a bit big and would probably be better suited for sunglasses.

I've been a member of the eyeglass club for a long time - I used to wear contacts but nowadays they bother my eyes - I'll be shopping for new glasses in the very near future too ;)

  • Joyce B replied 9 years ago

I love the look of the one on the right in the first frame and the one on the right in the second frame but I think the frames would look better in a softer color.
When they make your glasses check that they will work for you for reading, too, not just for mid-distance for the computer.

  • lyn67 replied 9 years ago

I vote for those on the  right sides in nr 1 and 2! Now, off to see other comments!:-)

  • Isis replied 9 years ago

I really like the right side of #2; perfect shape!

If they are reading glasses, I recommend that you get several pairs. I have a pair for work, another for home, and one in the car!

  • Transcona Shannon replied 9 years ago

I've worn glasses since I was 11 but did have to change my prescription to the dreaded bi-focals when I hit mid 40's. But I looked at it as an opportunity to buy new glasses!

You have the most beautiful facial features Sveta and glasses are just going to look stunning on you. I agree with Suz and Angie that the shape of the yellow frames look fabulous on you. Now to find them in a different color...

  • texstyle replied 9 years ago

I also like the yellow - they are fun and flattering in shape/style.

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

Well. FWIW, I feel naked without my specs - it helps that they allow me to SEE better too. I have never ever thought of them as aging. In fact I think of them as youthful.

  • EveningMood replied 9 years ago

With such a bone structure and beautiful, wide eyes like yours you could wear everything. But to my tast the dark frame in 1 and the yellow one in 2 stand out :)

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

My favs are the red ones, then the blue ones in #3.

You wear glasses well, you lucky thing.

  • JAileen replied 9 years ago

I guess I've been over the hill since I was 40. Who knew?

I put regular glasses in a different category from reading glasses. For reading glasses, go wild! I love those giant cat's eyes! I think you should seriously consider them.

BTW, while I always got prescription glasses until I had lasik eye surgery, now I buy my readers at the drug store. I do get prescription sunglasses which are plain on top and readers at the bottom. Very handy in the car when I need to look at directions or a map.

  • replied 9 years ago

Here's my 2-cents. I love love you in the very first pair. Frames not too thick and extend to the sides making your face appear a little more wider (you and I have similar face shapes). The color of the frames suites your coloring very well.

But most importantly, are they comfortable? Also when you get lenses make sure you get the coating that prevents glare from the computer screen. This will definitely cut down on your eye strain staring at a computer screen.

When you are not used to wearing glasses you may not know when glasses are uncomfortable at first. Make sure the frames are not too heavy and that they are comfortable on the bridge of your nose. Some people like nose pads, others do not. Make sure the glasses don't ride down or you will constantly be pushing them back into place (but this can be adjusted where you get your glasses and make sure you can bring your glasses back for free adjustments. I get my adjusted every few months for comfort).

Let us know what you finally decide on and share your photos!

  • pil replied 9 years ago

So many choices! I like the second pairs in #1, #2 and #4. Those cat eyes are so "yes, I'm all kinds of awesome"! Though I would never have enough confidence to wear such a statement myself, you can totally pull them off.

  • Ornella replied 9 years ago

I'd love to see you in frames from photo #1.2, but in the colour from photo #1.1 if it exists.

  • Diana replied 9 years ago

Late here but I vote for yellow too.

Welcome to the four eyes club. ;). I'm amused reading some of the comments because well, I've worn specs since I was 10 and couldn't see the blackboard in school. But on the other hand you know I totally wear specs to look older too. (For me this is a good thing! It means I think they look sophisticated, professional, grown up, not childish, etc).

  • dustt replied 9 years ago

Sveta - I like you in 1 & 2 and here's my trick for those inevitable reading glasses - have MANY, MANY pairs - all in different colors and slightly different styles while still keeping the shapes that look best on your face.  I think of them as the cherry on top!!

  • shiny replied 9 years ago

I'm not as much help when it comes to advice on best frame shape for one's face, but, as far as color goes, the red is very flattering on you. It looks great with your lips and skin tone.

  • Laura J replied 9 years ago

I just saw this post and I absolutely love the yellow frames!  I like the red frames too.

  • ManidipaM replied 9 years ago

so overwhelming. I went mad with sunnies so I know how this must feel.

I like the first one best for its lightness, the man frame best for fun and sass, and the light blue as well for flattering colour.

question... which shape do you read most easily in? my dad's a bug old fusspot about frames and likes them strong and emphatic... but after much quibbling settled on half rims for reading because they interrupted his vision least especially while sewing.

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

    Sveta, did you decide anything????
